His parents grew up in the depression era and consequently learned that hard work and strong faith would be vitally important to building and sustaining a life for their family and instilling diligence and persistence in the next generation. Tim readily accepted these lessons from his parents and put them into practice for others.

After graduating from the University of Houston Bates College of Law, he was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1981. He became Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law in 1989 and in Civil Trial Law in 1990 by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He is a Board Certified Civil Trial Advocate, certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is also licensed to practice before the United States District Court in the Southern, Northern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, Milam County Bar Association, Montgomery County Bar Association, Texas Trial Lawyers Association, The College of the State Bar of Texas, and the American Association for Justice.
